Rosie Flores

snapshot bio:

It’s telling that Rosie Flores’ e-mail handle begins “chickwpick…” In a long and eclectic career of singing, songwriting and performing, no phrase has ever described the San Antonio native better or more concisely.

In a career that spans more than four decades, Flores has proven to be a musical chameleon. She’s jumped feet first into punk rock (with her ’70-era band, The Screaming Sirens), country of both the Bakersfield and Nashville varieties, the Texas singer/songwriter scene, alt-country, straight-up rock and rockabilly. So much so the latter that her onstage moniker for years was “The Rockabilly Filly.” But always and throughout, she has been the Chick with the Pick.

Van Wilks

snapshot bio:

When you think Texas blues-rock, you think Van Wilks’. There are few names that have lasted and flourished within the Texas music scene like Wilks. Fads come and go, but Van Wilks is here to stay, as evidenced by his latest release, 21st Century Blues.

Like the steam engine on the cover, 21st Century Blues, his first studio album in 10 years, is a powerful beast that keeps on rolling from start to finish. Recorded at studios in Austin and France, 21st Century Blues is the real deal. This diverse collection of songs highlights Wilks’ impressive guitar styling with his striking lyricism to create a contemporary blues-rock masterpiece.

Spencer Perskin

snapshot bio:

The often imitated but never duplicated sound of leader and founder, Spencer Perskin, is undoubtedly the backbone of Shiva’s Headband.  Perskin began his career at age 8, and by age 9 was accepted as a special music student at Southern Methodist University in Dallas where he studied for eight years.  During his high school years, he played with the Hillcrest High Orchestra, The Hillcrest Band and The Dal-Hi Orchestra.  Following high school, Perskin attended North Texas State University where he, along with fellow classmates Michael Murphy and Steve Fromholz, were members of the school’s Folk Music Club.  Perskin also played with the N.T.S.U. Orchestra.

Three years later in Austin, he and his wife, Susan, and friends, founded the soon-to-be- famous Shiva’s Headband.  In 1969 Perskin released Shiva’s second single on his new Armadillo Record label. After the Capitol release in 1970, he founded, with a lot of help from his friends, the now-legendary music venue, Armadillo World Headquarters—the institution most responsible for placing Austin, Texas, firmly on the world music map!
