50 Over 50

Welcome to our online exhibit featuring 50 Texas musicians that are over 50 years old (however as of now there are more than 50 individuals listed below, and many of them are wayyyy over 50 years old, or have passed on bless their soul). Nevertheless, we hope that you enjoy these intimate snapshots into some amazing human beings that should be cherished and celebrated for as long as we have them!

As you work down the list (alphabetical), listen to each interview, read the bios, explore their websites, and review their discographies!

Lastly, and most importantly, try to take a moment to do something to let them know that they are special, whether it is attending one of their shows (and tipping), sending them a note through social media or reaching out in person to let them know how special they are to you! Enjoy…

These are the questions asked of each artist in the audio interviews below:

Standard Questions:

Q1:  Please state your name, date of birth and names of your parents.

Larry Lange

(Interview coming soon…)

snapshot bio:

Some people call it Swamp Pop, others call it Gulf Coast Soul. Larry Lange calls it “A Particular Slice of Americana – The San Antonio, Texas – Lafayette, Louisiana Axis. Extremely danceable late 50’s early 60’s regional hits shared between the musicians along US Highway 90, East and West.” Larry Lange, an exceptional bass player who has backed the likes of Texas favorites Doug Sahm, Paul Ray & the Cobras, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Angela Strehli, Lou Ann Barton and countless others, spent the 80’s with Delbert McClinton sharing the stage with Willie Nelson, Jesse Guitar Taylor, Billy Joe Shaver, Flaco Jimenez and Jr. Medlow.

Deciding to step forward to go back, Lange makes his debut as the front man with The Lonely Knights, and he’s clearly having a blast in the spotlight at last. He has assembled a critically acclaimed band with the soulfully braying saxes of Ed Vizard and Brad Andrew, guitarist Grady Pinkerton laying down a solid groove and rounded out by the outstanding drummer Michael Christian and piano thumper Jack Paine.

“This is simply the best new band in Austin – well, it’s hard to say “new” since these guys have been around for many years – but, they are the Best!”

– Clifford Antone

“Relationship losing it’s zing? Take your sweetie to see Larry Lange and the Lonely Knights and you can cancel that appointment with the marriage counselor.”

– Michael Corcoran, Austin American Statesman

snapshot bio:

“I would take side gigs. My friend owns Whole Earth Provision Company. He would say, ‘Hey, I need somebody to do something.’ One time, I was the store Santa Claus. Another time, I was a living mannequin. I did underwear ads for them too. They sold long underwear.

One day, a friend of mine says, ‘Hey! They need people to work on this television show about zombies - would you be interested?’ I said sure!

‍The show turned out to be Fear The Walking Dead.

My first day on the job, I found out you have to go to zombie school.”

Layton DePenning

snapshot bio:

Austin, Texas psych outfit the Lavender Hill Express formed in 1966. Something of a local supergroup, the founding lineup teamed former Baby Cakes guitarists Layton DePenning and Leonard Arnold with erstwhile Wig bassist Jess Yaryan and drummer Rusty Wier, along with keyboardist John Schwertner, formerly of the Reasons Why. Roughly a year after its inception, the Lavender Hill Express signed with the local Sonobeat label to cut its debut single, "Visions." An elaborate production by indie label standards, the song's rich vocal harmonies were complemented by a string quartet comprised of members of the Austin Symphony Orchestra. "Visions" was a local hit, and in March 1968 the group issued its follow-up single, "Watch Out!" Schwertner left the Lavender Hill Express soon after to form Plymouth Rock, and with new keyboardist Gary P. Nunn, the band cut "Outside My Window," which strongly hinted at the country direction its members would subsequently pursue. Indeed, the Lavender Hill Express dissolved in 1969, with DePenning and Wier later joining guitarist John Inmon in the progressive country trio Rusty, Layton & John, while Arnold resurfaced in Blue Steel. Most notably, Wier and Inmon were later founding members of Jerry Jeff Walker's Lost Gonzo Band, and DePenning later backed B.W. Stevenson.

A charismatic live performer, Krc wins over any audience with his captivating original songs and engaging stage presence. He also enjoys capturing the spirit of his favorite cover songs. Krc landed in Austin at the moment that a musical revolution was getting started at a styles-don’t-matter little-known joint called the Armadillo World Headquarters. Herb Steiner

snapshot bio:

Herb Steiner was born in Los Angeles in 1947 and began making music in the early 60's bluegrass scene of Southern California, and studied with Clarence and Roland White, Billy Ray Latham and many others. Mentored by Red Rhodes in 1968, Steiner started playing steel guitar with Linda Ronstadt's Stone Poneys Band, gaining his first taste of national touring.
In 1970, after a short year with Ronstadt and 3 years of California honkytonks, Steiner joined a band with Boomer Castleman and Michael Martin Murphey, playing every dance hall and skull orchard around Hollywood and Las Vegas, hustling recording dates in the daytime as a musician about town in Hollywood.
Steiner escaped LA in 1972 to move to Austin, Tx, and rejoined Michael Martin Murphey's Cosmic Cowboy Orchestra (for 2 albums), also picking and recording with B.W. Stevenson (was on the original "My Maria"), as well as Jerry Jeff Walker ("Viva Terlingua" and more), among many others…

Joe King Carrasco

snapshot bio:

Known as the King of Tex-Mex rock and roll, Joe King Carrasco creates a stylistic borderland of pop rock and Latin rhythms. His cross-cultural stew blends cumbias, vamp, salsa, surf, reggae, blues, and Latin-tinged polkas. It has been a long road, coming from Dumas, Texas, which is a dusty little west Texas town where in the 7th grade he started playing in garage bands. In his late teens, he was often lured to the beaches in Southern Mexico and was drawn to the Mexican music he was hearing around him. Back in Texas he joined up with future members of The Texas Tornados and formed a band known as Joe King Carrasco & El Molino and in 1978 released his 1st LP titled “Tex-Mex Rock & Roll”.

Lissa Hattersley

snapshot bio:

Lissa Hattersley is from upstate New York, a little town called Canandaigua near Rochester. She's spent most of her life in Austin, Texas and New York City. The way I get it, she wound up in Austin after her brother Cleve got here, but I'm never clear on what exactly he told her that convinced her to head south. But she did, and became an important part of the odd story of how Austin, Texas became one of the world's musical capitals. When she got to Austin in the early 70s, Lissa, Cleve and wondrous violinist “Sweet Mary” (and a revolving cast of sidemen and co-conspirators) formed a band called Greezy Wheels.
